When Big Tech says something is #free, it means that you're the product. 🤢
The internet should be a place of #freedom not a platform for data collection. 💃
Start taking your #privacy back by supporting open source alternatives to Big Tech! 💪

Why are Google and Facebook free? The answer might be worse than you think.
Google and Facebook are two prime examples in tech where the advertiser pays for the service. In return, these services are offered for "free" to the users.Tutanota

If something is "free" on the Net, not only are you the product, you are the free labor as well.
Whether you are providing the content that allows Facebook to rake in billions in revenue without paying a nickel for that content or all the expertise that was provided on StackOverflow sold off to "AI."
Reddit the same. You are the free labor.

Hi Fedi,
Just got laid off a month after buying our first house because the company is "right-sizing" its staff.
We have moved to a small town in NC hoping for better life, thinking our jobs will last us years. Small town living is great, but not many jobs around.
If anyone knows of any remote US opportunities for a graphic designer with some coding & web design experience that spent last couple years with data analysis/entry in a remote office do let me know.
Boosts appreciated ❤️ Thanks!

This has been in the works for some time. With help from the NixOS community, we're set up to begin the process of introducing NixOS as a Community support distro.
NixOS community will be helping Framework with docs and related and we will provide hardware to those selected.
Some details being ironed out. This is a method of ensuring NixOS users identified as ideal candidates (a couple of selected people) can help us ensure we have Framework docs in place.

Biden Signed the TikTok Ban. What's Next for TikTok Users?
Over the last month, lawmakers moved swiftly to pass legislation that would effectively ban TikTok in the United States, eventually including it in a foreign aid package that was signed by President Biden.Electronic Frontier Foundation

yeah this is pissing me off as I’m one of the larger cybersecurity creators on TikTok at 368,000 followers. It’s still how everyone finds my mastodon, twitch, and soon YouTube. It’s still also 80% of my revenue for my content creation LLC between shop and content payouts.
I’ve been on the platform since the pandemic started and any concerns we have about TikTok were already said about Meta and others

Perhaps that's starting to become an idea....

in reply to Brodie Robertson • • •Regarding the conundrum of shipping as developer intended vs distro reviewing and patching software
I think the answer is for distros to ship the package as intended unless it breaks something (like changing config files to work with the distro and other minor fixes) or has a serious issue when reviewed (like the XZ backdoor)
If it cannot be shipped as intended for any reason (legal stuff, distro policy, unable to maintain/review it, etc), then don't ship it.
